[Culture] A Generation Preparing for the Future : The Ready-Core Trend
Unlike in the past, when it was not too late to start preparing when the opportunity is offered, people are now preparing to seize the opportunity in advance, rather than waiting for it. This change is related to the “ready-core” trend, a way of life that always keeps prepared condition. The core of this trend is the attitude to respond to the uncertainty of life by always keeping life in a ‘ready’ state. This ready-core trend is reshaping not only modern life styles but also consumer behavior, influencing society as a whole.
The Rise of Ready-Core
This future-oriented attitude is not limited to a particular generation. Workers are building new skills and qualifications to prepare for job changes, while middle-aged and older generations are preparing for their second jobs after retirement. In other words, the tendency to remain prepared condition is now spreading throughout society.
The rise of Ready-Core, introduced in Trend Korea 2026, is closely related to growing social instability. Prof. Ko-Young Jae of Kyung Hee University Office of Career Development explained that the ready-core trend is being further accelerated by the development of AI technology and changes in industrial structure, adding, “People feel that their current abilities are no longer enough, and they are increasingly pressured to continuously learn and prepare themselves to adapt to change at any time. As a result, the perception that ‘people who are prepared can only survive’ is becoming more widespread among younger generations.”
According to an AI technology perception survey conducted by the mobile survey platform Kratos, 50.6% of respondents answered that “AI will pose a serious threat to jobs and daily life within the next 10 years,” revealing concerns about being replaced by AI. In addition, growing anxiety over job insecurity among young people has also contributed to the spread of the Ready-Core trend.
In this way, as the traditional concept of a ‘lifelong working’ gradually fades and job insecurity becomes an reality, the ready-core mindset of preparing for the future in advance is increasingly becoming a universal survival strategy.
From Life Planning to Consumption : The Spread of Ready-Core
The Ready-Core trend is now expanding over simple self-improvement into an attitude of designing one’s entire life in advance. As the perception that ‘it is better to prepare for retirement as early as possible’ spreads, many young people are investing in long-term financial products such as pension savings plans and Individual Retirement Pensions (IRP) as soon as they start working in order to prepare for life after retirement. According to the ‘2025 IRP Subscriber Statistics’ released by Mirae Asset Daewoo, people in their twenty showed the highest increase in IRP subscriptions, rising by 201% compared to 2022, followed by. In the case of pension savings funds, teenagers recorded the highest growth rate at 253%.
This trend is also becoming increasingly visible in the areas of health and childbirth planning. According to the ‘2025 Pre-pregnancy Health Care Program’ announced by Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of applicants for fertility testing support increased by approximately 210,000, compared to 2024. This suggests that women in their 20s and 30s are becoming more interested in preparing for healthy pregnancy even before marriage.
In this way, people are proactively planning various aspects of their lives—including retirement, health, and careers—in order to reduce uncertainty about the future. This tendency is particularly noticeable among young generations face with unstable employment environments. University students and job seekers continuously strive to strengthen their competitiveness by preparing qualifications, language test scores, internship experiences, and portfolios.
Ji Da-seong, a student in the Dept. of English Language and Literature, said, “Many of my friends already have internship experience or various portfolios. Seeing people who thoroughly prepare for employment before graduation makes me anxious and pressures me to work harder as well.” He added, “Preparing for employment can feel prouded because visible achievements build up, but at the same time, there are moments when I feel overwhelmed wondering how long I will have to keep preparing for the future.” It shows how the pressure to constantly prepare for the future has become deeply embedded in the daily lives of young people.
This preparation-oriented Ready-Core-ish attitude is influencing not only long-term life planning but also daily consumption patterns. Consumers increasingly engage in planned consumption by comparing prices and product performance before making purchases, creating lists of needed items in advance, and seeking efficient choices. In addition, the use of reservation and waiting services for popular restaurants, performances, and pop-up stores has become increasingly widespread. According to the survey conducted by Wiseapp, the number of monthly users of restaurant reservation and waiting apps in Korea increased by approximately 185%, from 1.02 million in 2022 to 2.91 million in 2025. This shows that even in the area of consumption, Ready-Core attitudes are spreading as people attempt to reduce failure and uncertainty.

When Preparation Becomes Pressure
In today’s rapidly changing society, people increasingly perceive failure not as part of a learning process but as a falling behind, leading them to constantly prepare themselves in order to reduce uncertainty about the future. Within this social atmosphere, Ready-Core is gradually evolving beyond a temporary trend into a fundamental strategy for surviving modern society.
Prof. Go explained about the prospect of this Ready-Core trend, stating, “This trend is highly likely to intensify because the social environment itself is becoming increasingly uncertain.” He added, “The development of AI technology, changes in industrial structures, economic instability, climate crises, and the fast information environment will continue to pressure individuals into feeling that they must always be prepared in advance.” He further argued that Ready-Core is becoming as a fundamental survival strategy in modern society.
However, concerns have also been raised that this Ready-Core-ish lifestyle does not necessarily function in a purely positive way. Prof. Go noted that “Preparation is originally a positive act that enhances stability and self-efficacy in life,” but added that “in today’s society, preparation often functions not as a process of growth, but as a survival strategy to reduce anxiety.” He further warned that excessive Ready-Core attitudes could lead people to “experience chronic helplessness, losing their motivation and vitality while trying to perfectly control every aspect of their lives.”
In this way, while Ready-Core is emerging as a new survival strategy in modern society, concerns are also being raised that it may place continuously pressure individuals.
The spread of the Ready-Core trend is gradually transforming not only consumption patterns but also modern lifestyles and attitudes toward the future. Ultimately, Ready-Core may not simply be a passing trend, but rather an unavoidable survival strategy for people living in an increasingly uncertain world.
